NOTAM[PDF]

INTRODUCTION

NOTAMs (NOtices To Air Men) are messages published by the Aeronautical Information Service.

These messages concern the status or modifications of an installation, the presence of obstacles in the departure and arrival paths, or dangers to air navigation. Frequency changes and procedure changes can also be notified.

The runway contamination status (snow, ice, ...) is indicated in a special NOTAM called "SNOWTAM".

The ASHTAM is a special NOTAM providing information about a volcanic eruption or a volcanic center cloud that may cause problems for flights.

Finally, a NOTAM called "NOTAM TRIGGER" is a particular NOTAM informing pilots of modifications made to documentation (AIP, eAIP, ...).

A NOTAM is composed of expressions, abbreviations, indicators, frequencies, numbers and coded language.

INFORMATION

Unless otherwise ordered, each NOTAM will give information in a specific order.

All NOTAMs are published in English.

A NOTAM will automatically have a letter and a four digit number followed by two digits for the year.

If a NOTAM contains errors, a NOTAM with a new number will be issued; or the incorrect NOTAM will be deleted.

The letters S and T are not used to identify a series of NOTAMs (except in certain specific cases).

NOTAMs are published with sufficient time for the interested parties to take the required actions.

A minimum of seven days notice will be given prior to activating prohibited, restricted or dangerous areas, and prior to undertaking activities that require the imposition of temporary airspace restrictions, (except for emergency operations).

Q CODE EXPLAINED

To decode a Q code, please refer to the article : NOTAM Code

In our case "MP" means aircraft stands (specify), and "LC" means closed.

TRAFFIC TYPE DETAILS
Traffic Meaning
I Concerns IFR flights only
V Concerns VFR flights only
Depending on the subject and content of the NOTAM, the traffic qualification field may contain a combined qualifier (example: IV)
NOTAM PURPOSE DETAILS
Purpose Meaning
B Included in PIB
O Concerning flights
N Immediate attention of aircraft operators
M Miscellaneous, not included in PIB and available upon request
Depending on the subject and content of the NOTAM, the purpose qualifier field may contain the combined qualifier BO or NBO.
NOTAM SCOPE DETAILS
Scope Meaning
A Airfield
E En route
W Navigation warning
Depending on the subject and content of the NOTAM, the scope qualifier field may contain the combined qualifier AE, AW, ...

If the subject is AE qualified, the airfield location indicator will appear on line A).

A LINE

A) LFBU ANGOULEME BRIE CHAMPNIERS

This line indicates the ICAO code of the airport(s) and/or FIR(s) where the NOTAM applies.

Multiple FIRs/UIRs may be indicated.

B LINE

B) 2021 Mar 26 15:48

The time and date on which the NOTAM becomes effective.

C LINE

C) 2021 Oct 31 23:59

The time and date on which the NOTAM ends.

If a NOTAM is permanent then the abbreviation PERM will be used.

D LINE

D) DDD-DDD HHMM-HHMM

The D line is not always present in a NOTAM.

When a hazard or operating condition is identified in the subject of the NOTAM, and during specific periods between the dates and times indicated in line B and C, then these periods are identified in line D.

Example: D) MON-SUN 0500-0700 → during 2 hours every day

E LINE

E) D APRON RESERVED FOR ACFT BASED

This line provides a better understanding of the NOTAM, its restrictions and information. The text must be clear and light.

F LINE

F) XXXXXXXX

The F line is not always present in a NOTAM.

This line indicates the lower limit of NOTAM activities or restrictions.

The abbreviations GND and SFC will be used in line F to indicate ground and surface respectively.

Example: F) 2000FT AMSL → from 2000FT QNH

G LINE

G) XXXXXXXX

The G line is not always present in a NOTAM.

This line indicates the upper limit of NOTAM activities or restrictions.

The abbreviation UNL will be used in line G to indicate "unlimited".

Example: G) 6500FT AMSL → up to 6500FT QNH
